Longtime America’s Got Talent judge Simon Cowell broke down to tears after the emotional performance of his golden-buzzer act. The moment was poignant that it was all captured on live television on Tuesday, August 28.

AGT contestant, Michael Ketterer, began his dream on the reality talent show when Cowell pressed the golden buzzer following his audition. More than his voice and talent, his amazing story championed him and has won the hearts of millions. His heart was the real gold.

Prior to this show on Tuesday, he set out for an audition to the show to prove to his six kids that they can accomplish anything they dream of. His story of triumph and love started when their only daughter convinced he and his wife, Ivey, to adopt.

In his audition, he stated:

“It took my daughter three years to convince us to adopt. After we went through the process of getting certified to adopt, our very first call that we got were for three little boys. I promise I’m not making this up.”

After three boys, the eventually decided to adopt two more boys and have a big family filled with love.

Initially, he had a dilemma of joining AGT but was later convinced by himself as he wanted to show his children that he can do it. Also, Ketterer is a pediatric mental health nurse by day. He said that he wants all his kids to know that they can achieve their dreams no matter what.

Further, he always motivates them by saying:

“When you’re surviving – you can’t dream. And that has been one of the most rewarding things, is providing them with a home and a safe environment where they’re free to dream. I’m here because I want to show them that their dad can live out his dreams, then nothing’s impossible for them.”

Emotional Cowell and the Touching Performance

Before the performance, the show host, Tyra Banks asked Simon Cowell why he chose Ketterer as his golden buzzer act. The judge replied that he is a real deal and said:

“He’s actually just a great human being and a great singer – and I’m so excited right now.”

After the introduction from Cowell, Ketterer rendered the judges and the crowd a deeply heartfelt performance of “Us” by James Bay. His voice was soulful and clear tugging one at the heartstrings. The stadium became deafeningly quiet as tears in some of the audience’s eyes started rolling. We cannot miss the judges as they, too, were hooked with Ketterer’s singing. All throughout, the rendition went oozing with emotion making Cowell break down to tears.

By the end of his run, Cowell could not fight his tears back as his emotions got the best of him. As said by Banks, it is one of the most beautiful things she saw from Mr. Cowell. That he, too, is human, soft and vulnerable.
