Dolly Parton’s “Coat of Many Colors” and Jeannie C. Riley’s “Harper Valley P.T.A.” are among this year’s inducted works in the 2019 Grammy Hall of Fame. Inductees into the Grammy Hall of Fame are selected from across the musical genre spectrum and represent recordings that have shaped our culture.

Parton’s “Coat of Many Colors” was already added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry back in 2011. She originally wrote that on Porter Wagoner’s tour bus in 1969. Parton had to write the song as it came to her on the back of a dry cleaning receipt. Wagoner had the receipt framed when the song became a hit.

Fans of the “Harper Valley P.T.A” singer would describe Jeannie C. Riley as someone who is ahead of her time – a trailblazing woman in the country music scene that was dominated by men. “Harper Valley P.T.A” was written by the brilliantly talented Tom T. Hall. And it earned Riley a Grammy Award for “Best Country & Western Vocal Performance” and the CMA for “Single of the Year.”

The President and CEO of Recording Academy Neil Portnow was enthusiastic in describing the new inductees.
