In LinkedIn’s 2014 survey of skills that were most instrumental in landing a new job, marketing campaign management came in at number 12 and have specific marketing – technology skills – business intelligence, digital marketing also ranked on the list. Healthy growth in marketing hiring, particularly for marketers with technical skills, will continually grow in a steady pace in the years to come.
This trend came as no surprise to any marketing manager looking to hire good people who know how to operate a marketing automation system. While this may be bad news to hiring managers, it is great news for a younger generation of marketing professionals who are looking to take their careers to the next level.
More and more companies are migrating towards the idea of creating a marketing stack with its core platform, marketing automation, is complemented by a series of integrated point solutions that address more specific needs. This notion of marketing technology stack is new and in fact, there are more than 2,000 software products for marketing related functions available today and a significant portion of them are less than five years in age.
For the young marketers, this would mean that it is a necessary skill set, marketing automation is an amazing resume builder, not so only because so many companies are adopting platforms and use them to drive direct revenue, but because marketing automation platforms are multidisciplinary in nature. They expose users to email marketing, landing page, basic HTML, web analytics, social publishing and much more.
Based on the traditional models of marketing departments, the division is comprised of specialists: marketing communications, content development, email marketing, web, social, and so on. Today, companies want marketers with a broader set of skills and these skills must be quickly applied to the new shiny new marketing platform the company have just invested in.
