As entrepreneurs, we have a lot of tasks daily and it sometimes is draining and tasks keep piling up, day after day. With the constant need for employee meetings, company events, and client calls, impromptu ideas – there is plenty of tasks to keep up with. Our attention that is spread thinly all at once makes it challenging to focus and get anything done.
The ability to focus on the catch prize is what sets successful entrepreneurs apart from the mediocrity and without focus, you can be virtually working on all hours of the day and night without being truly productive. Focusing on the wrong things could end you up on creating products that are not actually viable and even affect your employees by giving them unwarranted policies that in the first place, are useless. Take note that wrong focus should not be confused with paranoia. Paranoia in the work place should be rectified and should be addressed to get you, as an entrepreneur to focus on what is important to your business. Not just what you think is important to you as an employer.
Some entrepreneurs have no idea of some sort when they start the day. Do not start any work day without a plan. Take a few minutes to make a draft on how you think your day should be. What can be the best case scenario? What will you work on? How would you evaluate the day’s progress and so forth. Start putting your energy into creating an exceptional day, every day. However, it is just not enough to just think about the short-term. You should also have at least an idea on what life will look like after a year or two? What can be a typical day next week? These are some suggested questions to ask and start focusing on your answers and how to get there. Use this vision of the future to keep you on track in the present. Remind yourself every day what you are working towards to so there would be no day that is wasted.
You can have the best intentions and can have rock solid discipline but then can end up completely derailed by your surroundings and the people you surround yourself with. Do not underestimate the power your environment has on your ability to focus. Surround yourself with highly motivated and focused individuals that can serve as powerful positive influence on you. Once you have achieved this, take care of them. Hiring and getting new team members on due to personnel mismanagement and getting them on track is a complete waste of time, resources and energy and this can affect your focus for the long term.
WE have to admit that with today’s digital, hyper-connected world, our minds are overactive. When you are so used in being engaged in multiple activities at once, any focus goes out the window almost instantly. You would then need to retrain your thoughts and practice quieting your mind. A simple exercise can start with half an hour of uninterrupted time and then take on more if you would need it.
As a good input, ask yourself this question: what do you think to be doing in the next six months in order to be successful in the next few years? Choose just three, then rank them according to importance. Be specific and not to be broad or too general. Try to identify what is truly important to your business. The rest of the things you are doing?
Keep this list of priorities in a highly visible place and look at it every day. Make sure that you communicate this with your team and make sure that they too are focused on those three items as well as to keep you in check if you are focused on your selected goals. Allow everybody to move forward with the same focused goals together.
Lastly, be grateful. Even the smaller things matter. Do acknowledge crediting your team and yourself for a good job. Say your thanks a meaningful way, not just saying to say it.
