Wynonna’s Heartfelt Performance of a Christian Hymn

In 2005, Wynonna Judd released Her Story: Scenes from a Lifetime, a two-disc live compilation album. It was recorded live at the Grand Ole Opry on February 1st that year. The album includes a mix of songs that Wynonna originally recorded while under the duo, The Judds, and the other are cover songs. The first disc of the album contains 13 singles while there are 14 in the second disc.

One of the most notable performances she’s ever done is her cover of MercyMe’s “I Can Only Imagine“. In the video coverage, she begins her performance with a reflection of her life, of what she’s feeling and the state of her present being. Stressing that she’s never met her earthly father, she points out that she will soon meet her heavenly father. Her thoughts drew cheers and appreciation from the crowd, with her mother among them. She then continues to share a powerful and inspirational message that pierced everyone’s heart including hers.

Fighting back her tears, Wynonna starts singing “I Can Only Imagine“, in which she stated the song inspired her to continue moving on. With the melodic background and sound produced by the band, she performs the song full of spirit, power, and conviction. Every line of the hymn speaks right to the heart and renews every soul.

Truly, Wynonna has just made the right decision to include this single in her album. She gave justice to it and played it just right. Poignant and evocative, the hymn is a song to reflect on and very phenomenal in its truest sense.

A Short Background of the Song

“I Can Only Imagine” is contemporary Christian music by Christian rock band MercyMe. Lead Vocalist Bart Millard penned the song. The death of his father inspired him to write the song. He expressed in the song what it would be like in heaven and standing before God.

The song gained significance on Christian radio formats crossing over to mainstream radio formats such as adult contemporary. In late 2003 to early 2004, it entered the charts and ranked no. 40. Moreover, it charted on several formats. It peaked at no. 5 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary. Also, it reached no. 71 on Billboard Hot 100. In 2002, the song won the Dove Awards for Pop/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year and Song of the Year.

Furthermore, Millard earned the Dove Award for  Songwriter of the Year. With 2.5 million copies sold for the single, RIAA certified “I Can Only Imagine” platinum. Hence, it is the best-selling Christian single of all time. To date, no other Christian song has gone far to this milestone.
