This was one of the songs I remembered playing during the last days in my senior high school. It hit me so hard and made me emotional. Although its message centers on the love of a couple through the years, I consider it as a song for everyone. The memories that I have had when I was younger, the experiences I’ve had with my friends way back years were one of the best things that have happened to me.

The play of words in the lyrics combined with Kenny Rogers’ melodic and nostalgic voice gives the entire song a complete feeling of longing and melancholy. Kenny Rogers is one of my favorite singers and would definitely be included on my playlist forever.

About the Song

Penned by Steve Dorff and Marty Panzer, “Through the Years” was first recorded by American country artist Kenny Rogers on December 14, 1981. After a month, it was released as the fourth single from Rogers’ album Share Your Love.

In the first quarter of 1982, the song placed no. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In addition, it remained in the Top 40 for eleven weeks. Later on, “Through the Years” peaked at no. 1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. It became Rogers’ fifth single to top this chart. Meanwhile, it reached no. 5 on the Billboard Country chart.

With the success of the song, Kenny Rogers considered “Through the Years” as one of his career songs despite its relatively little success in North America. To note, Rogers performed the song at the 1983 Grammy Awards. Moreover, he also sang it in honor of Charles Barkley at a Philadelphia 76ers game in the spring of 2001.

In celebration of his 50th year on TV, Rogers performed a version of the song together with two of his close friends Lionel Richie and Dolly Parton. The performance included an archive video clip of him working with both on various projects through the years.

Song Meaning

With its title alone, the song reminisces and takes a look back on the relationship of a couple “through the years” of being together. It talks about the “ups and downs” and the man proclaims that despite these, his lover still stayed and never gave up. This part is evident in the lyrics that go:
