We all know that “Mama Tried” is one of Merle Haggard’s signature song. Haggard knows how to write songs that can make people relate to it. Moreover, let us not forget that Haggard is also an incredibly talented singer.

“Mama Tried” is a classic country song that many artists, especially country artists, perform this song live, record it, or sang as a tribute for the legendary Merle Haggard. One of the best performances of “Mama Tried” was in 2004. Willie Nelson invited on stage Merle Haggard and Toby Keith to sing Haggard’s song “Mama Tried.” Haggard began to sing the first verse, and then he was followed by Keith. Nelson didn’t sing, instead, he played the guitar while Keith and Haggard were performing. Nevertheless, it was an incredible duet. Haggard is truly amazing, and we can say Keith was also great.

Willie Nelson’s Live Album
The performance of Keith and Haggard were included in Willie Nelson’s live album known as Outlaws and Angels. The album contained recordings of the performances from Nelson’s show known as Willie Nelson Special. It was released in 2004. Other artists who performed on Nelson’s show were Joe Walsh, Kid Rock, Al Green, Shelby Lynne, Carole King, Toots Hibbert, Ben Harper, Lee Ann Womack, The Holmes Brothers, Los Lonely Boys, Lucinda Williams, Rickie Lee Jones, Keith Richards, and Jerry Lee Lewis. These various artists performed some classic country songs that are known.
“Mama Tried”
This popular song of Merle was written by him in 1968. “Mama Tried” was partly influenced by Haggard’s life. Some parts of the song like when he mentioned “Life without parole” is not true. The song speaks of the hardship the narrator caused his mother when he was sent to jail.
