The Gate Keeper of the Coal Miner’s Home
Herman Webb was an owner and operator of Webb’s Grocery in his hometown, Van Lear, Kentucky. However, he was known by fans as the gatekeeper of his family’s home in Butcher Holler. He was in charge of the property and he often gave tour guides to fans who visit the property. It was the home Loretta Lynn described in her signature song, “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”
The Coal Miner’s Son
Born on September 3, 1934, Herman Webb was the third eldest of the Webb siblings, following a brother named Melvin who was born in 1929 and Loretta Lynn, born in 1932. After him, Willie “Jay” Lee Webb followed by Donald Ray Webb who just died last year. Then there’s another country artist, Peggy Sue Wright then Betty Ruth Webb and last but not the least, Crystal Gayle.
Through the years, Herman Webb gave visiting fans a glimpse into what life looked like for his family. It was in their Eastern Kentucky property where two country legends were not only were born but raised. In an interview, he explained that their family grew up playing music. Not only that, his band was one of the stepping stones of Loretta Lynn’s career.
According to Crystal Gayle’s Instagram post, Webb died last Saturday, July 28 “with his wonderful children around him.”
“Some of you may know Herman from the countless tours he gave of the old home place in Kentucky or from his days performing with his band. He was a great musician! I called Herman “The Sheriff of Butcher Hollow”. I even found him a badge to make it “official” I know he is now and forever a sheriff in Heaven. We love and miss you, Herman!”
Moreover, the funeral arrangements for Herman Webb have not been announced.
He was a wonderful man and also a talented musician. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers will be with him.
