When the name George Strait is mentioned and a song was anonymously mentioned in a headline, it gives us nanoseconds to click right away and figure what song we are trying to click bait here. Fret not, it’s ‘The Chair’ performed and recorded by George Strait on February 28, 1985. Critics would say this song is definitely one of George Strait’s best and his ability to perform a storytelling song with such country finesse. Others would say that it is subpar compared to his other songs, say, Amarillo by Morning which is another George Strait classic and definitely many people’s favorite. I’d still argue that this is one of his finest if not, the best.

In 2012, Dean Dillon, one of the writers of the song, ‘The Chair’ revealed something about the writing process with Hank Cochran. Cochran was the same writer who wrote the Patsy Cline hit. ‘I Fall To Pieces’ and was also Dillon’s mentor. Dillon quoted:
“There’s some lines in that song which are just brilliant that Hank wrote. The line, ‘Thank you, can I drink you a buy, well, listen to me, what I meant is can I buy you a drink, anything you please,’ it just shows how flustered the guy was. He’s tripping over himself to get to know this girl. And using every line in the book, basically, to get her attention. And I just thought that was really brilliant on Hank’s part. But then you have to understand Hank Cochran was one of the most brilliant songwriters ever in country music.”
Of course, the beauty of a song would never be appreciated without proper delivery and George Strait definitely did that beautifully and did not disappoint. Ultimately, it was named as one of the CMT’s 100 Greatest Country songs of all time.
