The Recording of the Song
The song was written by Merle Haggard, Freddy Powers, Gary Church, and Tex Whitson. According to Rolling Stone, the latter talked to Bill Sherrill, who used to work with Jones, he told Sherrill about the song. When it was introduced to Jones, he was not informed that it was written by Haggard because they were not on good terms.
