We all face death at the very end of our journey. After we surface all our missions in life, we will all fly away. We all embrace God and go home to his celestial shores. And, it would be a rejoicing day if we carry on with our second life above with God. But, there’s one thing for sure, we will all fly away.

Alan Jackson gave his best and outpours his emotion singing the song “I’ll Fly Away.” Furthermore, the hymn is one of the most repetitive and most recorded hymns.

The Story…

Albert E. Brumley was the songwriter behind “I’ll Fly Away.” It was published in 1932 by the Hartford Music company in a collection titled “Wonderful Message.” The hymn was influenced by the 1924 secular ballad “The Prisoner’s Song.”

In some of the old interviews, Brumley wrote the song while picking cotton in his father’s farm in Rock Island, Oklahoma. It is said, Brumley was working and humming when he murmured the lines:

“If I had the wings of an angel, over these prison walls I would fly.”

This gave him the idea of writing the hymn into a gospel song. Moreover, Brumley described and compared the hymn to “The Prisoner’s Song.”  Brumley was able to finish the entire hymn after three years.

Of the 20th century with over 600 published songs, Albert E. Brumley has been described as a prominent gospel songwriter. Some of Brumley’s other popular hymns include “Jesus, Hold My Hand,” “Turn Your Radio On,” “I’ll Meet You in the Morning,” and “This World Is Not My Home.”
