About Amburayan River Project

The Amburayan River spans the Phillippine provinces of Benguet, Ilocos Sur and La Union. The river traverses the municipalities of Atok, Tublay, Bakun, Buguias, Kapangan & Kibungan of Benguet, Santol, Bangar & Sudipen of La Union and Sugpon, Alilem & Tagudin of Ilocos Sur. It supports agriculture, provides domestic water, and is used for recreational purposes. The river generates hydro-electic power and is a site for sand and gravel extraction in some municipalities.

The Jaime V. Ongpin Foundation, Inc. (JVOFI) received a grant from USAID for the project entitled. "Protecting and Defending the Amburayan River Basin and Watershed through Good Governance and Active People's Participation." Implemented under the Philippine-American Fund through the Gerry Roxas Foundation (GRF), the project was implemented in partnership with the Department of Environment & Natural Resources Environmental Management Bureau, the local government units and other key stakeholders from 2014-2017.

This project aimed to bring together concerned stakeholders in the management of the Amburayan River Basin and Watershed and institutionalize a collaborative agreement that would ensure the protection of people’s rights and the interests of all stakeholders to protect the integrity of the river and its watersheds.
