Cosmetic Dentistry

With specialized training and education, dentists are able to expand their knowledge and expertise in the practice of cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry improves the appearance of an individual’s teeth, gums, and helps a person bite and chew food with adequate force and depth. In short, cosmetic dentistry’s mission is to bring out the full function and aesthetic potential of your teeth.

Some of the cosmetic dental treatments we offer at Steven F. Stanley D.D.S. are the following:

  • Whitening or bleaching to lighten discolored teeth.
  • Reshaping the teeth and removing the parts of the enamel to improve the teeth’s appearance
  • Bonding, or a process wherein a special material is applied to a tooth’s surface before it is polished, shaped, and hardened
  • Dental bridges or otherwise known as false teeth, which are attached between porcelain crowns to fill in parts left by missing teeth.
  • Applying thin custom-made porcelain laminates or veneers that are bonded directly to the teeth.
  • Gum lifts, which involves reshaping the bone structure to improve the appearance of teeth

Bonding

Our teeth bonding treatments are highly effective and offered at affordable rates. Bonding is a procedure wherein a tooth-colored resin is applied and hardened to the individual’s teeth. Cosmetic materials such as silver amalgam fillings are used in the procedure and this can help shape and refine your tooth to match the adjacent sets of your teeth. The color of the bonding material that is used corresponds with the true shade of your teeth so that it appears more natural. Additionally, this procedure can repair chipped or cracked teeth, close gaps and enhance the form or irregularly shaped teeth. It is important to note that the duration at which the benefits of bonding lasts heavily depends on a person’s habits and dental hygiene. Bonded teeth that are properly maintained can last up to 10 years or more before requiring a new treatment.

Crown and Bridges

The easiest way of replacing a missing tooth is the placement of a fixed bridge. A bridge is recommended when the patient is missing a tooth and the gaps left by the missing tooth cause the residual teeth to shift to the remaining space. This is then followed by placing crowns on the adjacent teeth where a tooth is missing and making a false tooth for the space where the tooth has been lost. When missing teeth and large gaps are left untreated, it will make chewing more difficult and ultimately make the individual highly susceptible to gum disease .The procedure is usually be done in one appointment, and a follow-up appointment is needed for a final retouch.

On the other hand, crowns may be recommended depending on the following conditions:

  • Restoration of a fractured tooth
  • Protect dental implants
  • Root canal treatment
  • Replace a filling when there are insufficient teeth remaining
  • Bridge attachment
  • Cover a discolored or poorly shaped tooth

Reconstructive & Implant Dentistry

There are many factors that can contribute to the loss or deterioration of your teeth, such as hereditary or developmental defects, disease, injury, and excessive wear from clenching or grinding. Tooth loss often results in unwanted changes to your facial appearance, as well as a huge inconvenience in your ability to chew and articulate words properly.

While a fixed restoration cannot be detached from the mouth without the skills of the dentist, detachable restorations can be easily removed from the mouth by the patient without the need for professional assistance.

Implant treatment protocols for patients lacking sets of teeth include implant-supported fixed restorations and retaining foundations of the over denture. Surgical Procedures

Surgical procedures in the field of dentistry are generally done through teeth extraction, periodontal surgery and implant procedures. These specific types of operation on your teeth and gums will help stabilize your overall well-being, because they eliminate infection and diseases brought by poor oral hygiene. A full range of oral surgeries are available at our clinic, and we handle each procedure with utmost care and precision. With a team of experienced dentists and orthodontists, we assure you high rates of success after undergoing our superb surgical treatments.

Dentures

Dentures are detachable false teeth made of acrylic or metal wear well which are fitted to your gums. Dentures fit comfortably over the gum area to substitute the missing teeth and remove any probable complications caused by breaches. The gaps left by lost teeth can be a source of numerous problems during mastication and can even be problematic in speech. Hence, partial dentures are the best remedy to replace the missing teeth and fill in the gaps. On the other hand, in cases where all of the teeth need to be removed and replaced, complete dentures are prescribed. These will replace all of the patient’s upper or lower teeth.

Periodontics

Periodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with illnesses and disease of the supporting structures of the teeth together with the gums, periodontal membranes, and alveolar bone. Many people do not realize that periodontal disease is the chief cause of tooth damage in both children and adults. The disease can affect the gums, bone and other supporting structures of the teeth and if left untreated, it can affect neighboring cavity-free teeth. The manner of treatment depends upon the extent of the disease. If any disease exists, regular maintenance will help control the dental problem.

Periodontics includes dental prosthetic procedures such as:

  • Crowns
  • Veneers
  • Bridges
  • Implants
  • Dentures
  • Implant-supported prosthesis

Regular visits to the dentist, brushing your teeth daily and regular flossing will also help prevent periodontal disease. We also recommend eating a healthy diet and avoiding food and beverages that are notorious for staining and leaving starchy and sugary deposits on your teeth.

Endodontics

Endodontics is a surgical procedure which involves the pulp or the root of the tooth that needs repair, or otherwise known as root canal procedure. When the teeth are severely damaged, the nerves or pulp needs to be removed. The tooth can be retrained for longer periods with the help of endodontics and reconstructive procedures. Once the inside or pulp of the tooth is removed and filled, the tooth can be retained for many years by reconstructing the tooth with a post and crown.

Below are some variations of root canal procedure:

  • Pulpotomy— Extraction of infected portion of the pulp to preserve the surrounding healthy tissues.
  • Apicoectomy— This process is also known as a root-end resection. There are instances where a root canal alone will not be enough to relieve pain. Hence, the end of the tooth, called the apex, will be removed by entering through the gingiva and surgically extracting the diseased material.

Growth and Development

Every child should be monitored on a regular basis, especially when it comes to the growth and development of their teeth and gums. Eruption patterns, tooth development, and oral-facial growth all need to be checked and observed on a semi-annual basis with the supervision of a professional dentist.

In addition to regular visits to the dentist, practicing proper dental hygiene and eating a healthy diet must be taught to kids early on to prevent the early onset of tooth decay and cavities.

Promoting excellent oral health to kids is also a part of our advocacies at Steven F. Stanley D.D.S., and we highly encourage parents at Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, to bring their children to our dental office so we can assess their oral needs and equip them with the right kind of protection for their dental health.

Topical Fluorides

Topical fluoride is provided on the surfaces of the teeth, and this application is usually done in the office after your teeth are cleaned. Fluoride dentifrice are agents used with a toothbrush to clean, whiten and polish natural teeth. They can also be in different forms like paste, powder, gel or liquid. Gel solutions adhere to the teeth and eradicate the continuous dampening of enamel surfaces required when solutions are used; while other foam solutions are developed to lower the risk of fluoride overdose as well as to maintain the efficacy of topical fluoride treatment. Topical fluoride application does not need suctioning, making it applicable to be done at home, too. When applying fluoride as a home remedy, remember to rinse your mouth thoroughly for perfectly cleaned gums and teeth!

Fluoride Dietary Supplements

Tooth decay and cavities are the most common dental health problems experienced worldwide. However, a recent discovery shows that the rate of patients suffering from tooth decay and cavities has dramatically dropped, as a result of continuous intake and application of fluoride. Fluoride helps repair the initial stages of tooth decay even before the decay develops. In small and regulated amounts, it is as safe and effective as any other nutrients. Fluoride dietary supplements are also being developed to increase the strength of the enamel covering on the tooth prevent more serious oral health problems. If you wish to avail fluoride dietary supplements, it is important to first ask your dentist if supplements are safe and compatible to be included in your dietary needs.

Sealants

Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings painted on the chewing exteriors of the molars and premolars to protect the tooth from harmful bacteria and decay. This procedure is designed to be an aid in deterring cavities particularly in children. The teeth are given a coating, which is a painless procedure done without anesthetic. While frequent brushing and daily flossing can get rid of food deposits and plaque from the tooth’s surfaces and canals, the bristles cannot fully reach into all the corners and crevices of your gums and teeth. As such, the sealants rapidly bond into the indentations, canals, and grooves of the tooth, thus forming an effective shield over the enamel of the tooth and inhibiting plaque build-up.
